James Whittaker is a PHD student currently studying at the Cardiff School of Art and Design. His work has concerned hybrid masculinity as performed through dress, with a particular focus upon the flamboyantly dressed Soundcloud Rappers of the late 2010s. This research was presented in the recent masculinity /menswear/style/identity conference Globalising Men’s Style. James’ current research addresses how the majority of white, heterosexual men’s use of flamboyant dress (i.e. skirts and nail polish) continues to be utilised in surprisingly mundane, rigid ways. He proposes an overall lack of diversity that continues to dominate contemporary menswear, despite claims of male dress Revolution or that of softer, more effeminately dressed New Men.
